I have been in an intern for Sprint this summer in Overland Park, KS. There are many different technical departments within Sprint to choose from. I was given a choice between six before I started. The department I am working in is responsible for supporting Nextel Direct Connect on Sprint; a product recently released to consumers. Aside from learning about the direct connect network, my main responsibility for the summer has been to redesign and update my organization’s knowledge management practices. I was given quite a bit of autonomy for the project, but it also required extensive collaboration with other departments. The most valuable part of this internship has been my experience as part of the Direct Connect team. The team functions very well; everyone pulls their own weight, and everyone is willing to drop what they are doing and lend a hand. It will serve as a model for future teams that I am a part of.
Sprint’s intern program includes many social events, informational sessions, and a presentation followed by a question and answer period with the CEO Dan Hesse. A committee of interns and new college hires was formed to help plan social activities. There were at least two intern social activities per week.
Finally, Overland Park was an excellent place to live for the summer. Traffic was not too bad most of the time. There is much to do in the area, and it is close enough to downtown Kansas City.
